Types of Dental Emergencies
There are a variety of dental emergencies, and each one is unique since they come in all shapes and sizes. Here are some guidelines on how to approach each situation:
Abscesses/Infections
If you have a dental abscess (a pocket of pus caused by infection), it can be very serious. The infection can spread to other parts of your body, making it a medical emergency. If this happens, you should visit our emergency near you right away. After they address the immediate danger, you might need to see your regular dentist to fix the problem that caused the abscess.
If your regular dentist already informed you that there was a chance you could develop a problem, like an abscess, after a recent dental treatment, they might have a plan in place. So, you should reach out to them quickly to get the help you need.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
The first thing to do for a badly bitten lip or tongue is to reduce or stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the area that is bleeding. If possible, use a clean, sterile cloth and apply ice to reduce swelling. And, if the bleeding does not stop, go to the emergency room at the hospital.
Broken or Lost Dental Appliance
If you break or lose a dental appliance such as dentures, night guards or retainers, call your dentist to begin the process of acquiring a replacement. The dentist may provide a temporary replacement (where possible) while the appropriate appliance is being made.
Broken Teeth
A broken tooth can normally be saved, at least in part. If the break is small, your dentist will color match and use a small filling to repair the damage. If the break is larger, a root canal may be necessary. Crowns are attached where possible to match existing teeth.
Knocked-Out Teeth
If you lose a permanent (adult) tooth, you may be able to have it put back in. However, to save it, a tooth needs to be put back in within a short time after losing it. If it is replaced within 10 minutes, there is a better chance to save it. After 2 hours, it is unlikely to take root again. If the tooth is clean and sterile, put it back in your mouth, so long as there is no risk of swallowing it. If it is not clean, place it in milk, and go to an emergency dentist in Grande Prairie and request urgent care.
Lost Filling
If you lose a filling, the remaining area can be sharp and uncomfortable. Place softened sugarless gum in the filling and see your dentist as soon as possible.
Object Stuck in Between Your Teeth
If and when something gets stuck between your teeth, it can cause significant dental discomfort. Your first step should be to try to dislodge the item using dental floss. If you cannot, see your dentist. Other home remedies, like using a needle, can cause other damage, such as scratching the tooth or cutting your gums.
Toothache
Begin by calling your dentist and explaining your symptoms; it’s important to describe the severity of your pain. After this, you may ease your discomfort by using over-the-counter medications. Use ice packs to reduce the pain; be careful to not leave it on the area for too long. Do not use heat either, as this will normally increase the pain.
It is always best to seek emergency dentist near you even if you are unsure if you need care. A dentist can examine your smile and oral cavity and identify the most appropriate path to pursue.
